LEATHER CARE GUIDE
Leather is a beautiful natural material that, if properly taken care of, can last for a very long time.
The products we produce are handmade crafts made of the finest leather out there and it is our wish that it is handled as such. Below you will find a list of the arch-enemies of leather and how best to conquer them, to maintain a beautiful and long-lasting product, for you and the environment.
Everything you care about (including yourself) needs a little TLC (tender loving care) from time to time, and that includes your TCF products. To prolong the lifespan of your leather goods, try to keep them as clean as possible. By using a damp and clean cloth, carefully wipe your products thoroughly. If the product is in need of a more robust clean, we recommend using a mild detergent or soap meant for leather. Ask your local leather expert or find a list of our favorites here.
Leather, despite treated, can be very sensitive to moisture. When leather is exposed to moisture it is absorbed into the leather with can affect the look and feel of the leather. Try to avoid all moisture, such as water, hand sanitizer, and perfume (the exception being a damp cloth for cleaning), and be mindful of the surface where you put your product.
Should your product become subject to a misfortunate encounter with moisture, we recommend letting it air dry for a couple of days. Fill our bag with crumpled paper to ensure it keeps its shape as it dries.
DRYNESS AND SCRATCHING
Professionally processed leather possesses the most amazing quality and has an exclusive and rich finish. If your case or bag is starting to look a bit tired and dull it has most likely been overexposed to sunlight or drought. In addition to affecting the leather itself in a negative way, too much direct sunlight can also dry out the plastic casing making it less tolerable to impact and friction causing it to break more easily.
To restore your product and regain its exclusive finish, buffer a gentle amount of leather grease into your product using a clean and dry cloth. Allow the cream to sit and absorb into the leather for 10-15 minutes, before removing excess with a new clean and dry cloth.
Start with a little cream at a time – you usually need less than you think!
Superficial scratches, especially on vegetable-tanned leather, can be minimized by buffering or polishing the product with a gentle amount of leather grease.
Too much of anything is bad, and the same goes for leather grease. Just like moisture, the leather will absorb grease, oil, and fat, which will change the characteristics of the leather. Be very cautious when using hand lotion or oils and make sure your hands are completely dry when you are handling your leather items.
Because of this, we recommend having two or more cases or bags to switch between, just as you would with your leather shoes. That way they get some much-needed rest to stay beautiful and last longer. All our handbags come filled with tissue paper and in a dust bag. To maintain the quality and shape of the bag when it is not being used we recommend storing your bag filled and in its dust bag.
